Letter from our Chapter’s Academic Advisor
October 2009
Dear Student/Educator,
On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Academic Projects Committee, I would like to welcome you to our new Students and Educators webpage!
We are delighted to announce that 2009 marks ISACA International’s 40th anniversary. As a Canadian affiliate, we are also celebrating our local Chapter’s 30th anniversary, and we hope to continue enlightening the academic community on the standards, designations and developments of the Association.
This webpage is designed to facilitate students who are interested in, or in the process of, pursuing the Certified Information Systems Auditor™ (CISA®), Certified Information Security Manager™ (CISM™), or Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT™ (CGEIT™) designation. Additionally, this webpage serves as a valuable resource for students who are interested in becoming a student member of ISACA, volunteer opportunities with the Chapter, and our Chapter Scholarship, to name a few. Information Systems educators will be able to find information on the Academic Advocate program, and will also have the opportunity to partner with ISACA for a class presentation and/or learning module that would provide students with a unique learning perspective in preparation for a career in IT assurance, security and governance.
This year, our Chapter has established an Academic Committee who will be organizing several events for 2009 – 2010, underscored by the following objectives (Adapted to the “Chapter’s Strategic Objectives” and the “ISACA North America Leadership Conference on Incorporating Students into your Chapter”):
1. To recruit young minds for the Academic Projects Committee and to engage university and college students into the Chapter’s organizational structure by capturing their interest and a “sense of belonging” to ISACA.
2. To establish a lasting and reciprocal partnership between the Chapter and local universities and colleges.
3. To raise the Chapter’s profile and designations at university and college campuses by inviting students and professors to attend Chapter-, university-/college- and student-organized events.
4. To develop and maintain a “Students amd Educators” webpage on the Chapter’s website to support the efforts of the Academic Projects Committee in carrying out their responsibilities, and to facilitate the communication with the academic community at large.
Our Academic Projects Committee is always on the lookout for enthusiastic volunteers to help us succeed in our objectives and initiatives, and we believe that the livelihood of our Chapter’s future is heavily influenced by our academic outreach. Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events!
If you have any questions or comments, or would like to join our Academic Projects Committee, please email me at advisor1@isaca-ottawa.ca.
Sincerely,
Qiu Tong
Academic Relations Advisor

Mission: To support and enhance relationships among the faculty and student bodies of colleges and universities with local ISACA chapters, ISACA worldwide and the IS audit and control profession. (www.isaca.org)
ISACA created the position of Academic Advocate to recognize the university contact for the ISACA Student Special Interest Group. This person can be a faculty member or university employee. In order to become officially recognized as the ISACA Academic Advocate,
the Chapter must notify the Academic Relations Department, research@isaca.org or 1-847-253-1545, with the name and contact information of the individual.
Academic Advocates will receive a complimentary copy of COBIT 4.1. Additionally, for each year that the advocate continues to meet the requirements prescribed by the Association, they will be provided with a complimentary ISACA International membership.
Benefits of partnering with your local ISACA Chapter include (Adapted from the “Chapters University Relationship Best Practice”):
-Ensure the future of the profession by educating students about a career path that might not be entirely familiar to them,
-Increase the students’ skills by providing them “real world” experience and expertise, in addition to their academic training,
-Enhance your course’s image and presence within the university environment through your active education and advocacy efforts,
-Encourage other academicians to become involved in ISACA, and
-Establish a connection with the future professionals that will form the basis for membership of the profession in the years to come.
