President's Message


Dear ISACA members and friends,

I would like to wish you all a happy and prosperous new year. 2013 promises to be very interesting and challenging year for our professions within the IT industry. Budgetary pressures and a higher reliance on IT systems by both government and industry will drive the need for highly available and well managed IT systems as never before. Our members, through their experience and training, have always been and will continue to be on the front lines protecting the interests of their employers and the public. I am very proud of you all and of ISACA. We will continue to offer certifications that remain relevant to the ever changing IT environment. We will also continue to offer presentations and workshops that directly address the important issues specific to our environment here in Ottawa. All of these programs and events are prepared by dedicated volunteers within our membership and I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank them for their service to us all. I would like to invite you to join our volunteer team. Together we will continue to improve our offerings and your time spent with us will count for CPE's towards your certifications. Again, all the best to you for 2013!!

Je vous souhaite à tous un heureux et prospère nouvel an. 2013 seras très intéressant et rempli de défis pour nos professions au sein the l'industrie informatique. Les pressions budgétaires ainsi qu'une plus grande dépendance sur les systèmes informatiques par les gouvernements et l'industrie continuent a créer une nécessitée plus forte que jamais pour des systèmes informatiques toujours plus disponibles aux usagers et bien gères. Nos membres, avec leur expérience et entrainement, ont toujours étés et continuent d'être sur la ligne de feu, protégeant les intérêts de leurs employeurs ainsi que ceux du grand public. Je suis tres fier de vous tous ainsi que d'ISACA. Nous allons continuer d'offrir des certification qui demeureront toujours pertinentes a un environnement informatique en constante évolution. Nous allons aussi continuer de vous proposer des présentations et ateliers qui s'adressent directement a nos besoins ici à Ottawa. Tous nos programmes et événements sont prépares par un groupe de volontaires dédies et j'aimerais les remercier personnellement pour leur service a nous tous. J'aimerais aussi vous inviter a vous joindre a notre équipe de volontaires. Nous pourrons ainsi travailler ensemble pour continuer a améliorer nos programmes. De plus vous pourrez bénéficier de crédits de manutention de vos certifications. Encore, bonne année 2013!!


Heidi Melenchuk: ISACA Ottawa Valley Scholarship winner for 2012

Ms. Heidi Melenchuk is a 4th year University of Ottawa student currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program, Finance option. In addition to the finance option, she is pursing her Chartered Accountant designation. She completed the Management of Information Systems and Technology course with a final grade of A-. She is on the Dean's List and is a member of the University of Ottawa Beta Gamma Sigma chapter.

During her time at the University of Ottawa she has been involved in a number of extracurricular activities. She was a member of the student club Managers Without Borders and in 2011 was the Vice-President of the Virtual International Case Competition.  During the 2011-12 school year she was Director of Finance for the Telfer School of Management Student Council. She has volunteered as a 101 week guide and at the annual Telfer Golf Tournament. Heidi has completed two summers as a student at the Royal Bank of Canada and she has worked in a marker position at the University of Ottawa.

On behalf of the ISACA Ottawa Chapter, the Board would like to congratulate Ms. Heidi Melenchuk on this award and her outstanding academic accomplishments and community contributions to date.

Nino Pasalic: ISACA Ottawa Valley Award winner for 2012

Mr. Nino Pasalic is an Algonquin College graduate, and is currently working as a level 3 Network Security Support Engineer for Check Point Software Technologies. He was enrolled in 5th semester of Computer Systems Technology – Security program when he received ISACA leadership award in fall 2011. During his studies at Algonquin College Nino has been assigned the role as a Student representative for School Academic Council (SAC), and has worked as a tutor helping other students achieving higher academic results. His GPA at Algonquin after completing 6 semesters was 3.98/4.00 (final grad A+).

Nino is pursuing further studies to obtain Security and Information Assurance – Information and Computer Security Bachelor’s degree while working full time at his current position.

On behalf of the ISACA Ottawa Chapter, the Board would like to congratulate Mr. Nino Pasalic on this award and his outstanding academic accomplishments and community contributions to date.

January 9, 2012 – Mr. Robert Venczel, President of the ISACA Ottawa Valley Chapter met with Ms. Corinne Charette(CIO of Canada), Mr. Wade Daley (Senior Director, IT Policy Development & Oversight), and Mr. Robert Graham (Director, Community Planning and Generics).

The discussion revolved around the role the local ISACA chapter and ISACA International could play – by leveraging access to valuable ISACA material via ISACA membership; the value provided by the CISM and CGEIT certifications; the upcoming COBIT 5.0 framework; and via the ISACA OVC events and those organized by its local partners – in helping the federal government meet the demand for various skills that will be required in the future in the information technology world, especially in the context of significant changes happening, such as the recent launch of Shared Services Canada.

November 25, 2011 - ISACA Ottawa Valley Chapter has been featured in the Fall 2011 issue of the FrontLine Security magazine. See page 13 for details.

October 25, 2011 - The Board of Directors of the ISACA Ottawa Valley Chapter held a special meeting to discuss long-term, strategic objectives for our chapter and the goals supporting those objectives. Over the course of the next few weeks a draft document will be produced that will be presented to the members for feedback. Stay tuned!

June 29, 2011 – Mr. Robert Venczel, President of the ISACA Ottawa Valley Chapter together with Mr. Bill Kessels, Ottawa-based Ernst & Young Partner made a presentation about the local chapter, ISACA International and its designations and tools at the CAATTs Working Group meeting chaired by Mr. David Coderre, Director with the Assistant Comptroller General's Office (Treasury Board of Canada). During the questions and answers period working group members provided valuable feedback on the types of future ISACA Ottawa Valley Chapter events federal government employees would be interested in, suggestions that will be addressed during the planning for the 2011-2012 events program.

news February 23, 2011 – As a follow up to his most recent meeting with the Comptroller General of Canada, Mr. Robert Venczel, President of the ISACA Ottawa Valley Chapter met with Brian Aiken, Assistant Comptroller General of Canada (Internal Audit) and David Coderre, Internal Audit Sector Director, to discuss further about specific steps for our Chapter to provide IT audit and ISACA frameworks and tools training to federal government employees, and to increase the number of ISACA certified and ISACA members locally, here in Ottawa. A presentation to be made by Mr. Venczel at one of the future CAATTs working group meetings is currently in planning.

Also, Mr. Venczel has been in contact with the CIO of Canada, Ms. Corinne Charette’s office, working with her staff on planning a meeting in the month of May 2011 to discuss the benefits of the ISACA membership and its designations to the IT community in the federal government, and specific ISACA training offerings geared towards the same constituency in the areas of IT security, IT governance, COBIT, Val IT and Risk IT.

news November 30, 2010 - Mr. Robert Venczel, President of the ISACA Ottawa Valley Chapter met with Mr. James Ralston, Comptroller General of Canada to discuss about raising the profile within the federal government of ISACA, its valuable tools and certifications, and of the local ISACA Chapter and its members. Mr. Venczel also informed Mr. Ralston of the discussions he has been having over the last two months with ISACA International regarding the institution of a group membership rate for public sector employees.

Based on the success of the December 14th joint ISACA-IIA breakfast session, your local ISACA Chapter is planning to offer additional events in the future in collaboration with the IIA Ottawa Chapter and other similar organizations (e.g., AFCEA, HTCIA, etc.) whom the Chapter President is working with on developing new partnership opportunities.

Finally, a series of meetings are being planned with government officials in the New Year, so please stay tuned for more news in 2011!
